18 Dec Off
December Fishing report Gold Coast.
Weather conditions so far in December haven’t been particularly favourable, with strong winds and less than average sea conditions. However on the few days when the weather has been more settled the fishing has been quite favourable.
Gold Coast Offshore Report
Pelagic species arrived early in the month with clean warm blue water, Mahi mahi and marlin have been taken out on both the 24 fathom reefs and the 36 fathom grounds. Quality fish have been landed using both lures and live baits.
Closer in has seen the long awaited return of the mackerel schools. Good catches of Spotties have been taken on Palm beach and mermaid reefs, with a few also turning up on the 18 fathom reefs. Pilchards and small yakka’s being the bait of choice.
Bottom reef fishing has slowed down a little as is the normal for this time of year. There has still been a few pan sized snapper, Tailor, and the odd trag on the 24s. The wider grounds have produced Snapper and a few Big cod on the 36 and 50 fathom reefs.
Inshore Fishing Report Gold coast
With windier conditions over the past month, we have run a couple of estuary fishing charters in the Broadwater for mixed bags of Flathead, Grassy Tusk fish, Whiting, Bream and tailor.
My friend Dan reports some quality Mangrove jacks have been taking lures in local Gold coast canals. Flatties and Trevally are on the chew in Coombabah creek.
Recent rains should have Mud crabs on the move too. Now is a great time to set some pots and chase these tasty critters. we do however suggest you keep a close eye on your pots. Unfortunately theft of crab pots is becoming a common irritant.
That about wraps up this months Gold coast fishing report. Remember to take care on the water through the holiday period.
